History of “Crawford's Amphitheater”
(Peoples title only)
Fitzroy Gardens.
In order to have a utilisation of the natural slope from Clarendon Street down to the bridge, at Crawford's suggestion to make an apron stage at the bottom, it was taken up by Parks and Gardens and thousands of tons of soil was brought in to make a staging area big enough for all sized events including tattoos, ceremonials, ethnic days, re enactments and just plain fun.
As adjacent to this was side show alley and children's place, great stuff for the whole family and all free.
The result was spectacular and unique in so far that although many thousands could view the arena, and yet the apron gave artists a feeling of overlooking the audience, making the historical Fitzroy gardens come alive as never before.
